Senior Citizens

Senior Citizens (65 years & older)

It is undeniable that most people slow down as they age. It is also a fact that good motor functions are essential for comfortable and safe driving. Your body’s strength, flexibility, and coordination must all be working in sync when operating your vehicle.

It is never the department’s intention to take away someone’s independence, but instead it is our responsibility to balance this with the safety of all in mind. In fact many senior citizens continue to enjoy their transportation independence.

As stated in the Traffic Act, once a person is applying for a licence renewal, they are to declare any disability that they may currently have or had in the past.  The Director of Vehicle & Drivers’ Licensing may, at his discretion, request that a medical certificate be produced, to determine whether a renewal should be granted.

If you are asked to produce a medical certificate of fitness to drive a motor vehicle, you must schedule an appointment with a locally licensed medical practitioner of your choice.

Remember, stating your disability does not necessarily mean that you will not be able to continue driving. Especially if it does not impede your ability to safely operate your vehicle. Of course, as time goes by, the possibility of a disability improving or worsening is the reality.

Understandably, this can be emotionally difficult to accept. However, it is important to remember that safety is our number one priority. While we may not be able to predict or prevent all road accidents, we must take a responsible and logical approach to preventing as many as possible.
